About us

Equinox Woodworks is a worker-owned cooperative based in Burnsville, NC, building custom homes, timber frames, and commercial spaces in the South Toe Valley and surrounding mountains of Western North Carolina

We draw from traditional Appalachian mountain vernacular and combine it with rigorous building science: airtight envelopes, high-performance insulation assemblies, and construction practices designed to meet NC Green Built and Net Zero standards. A home can be warm, handcrafted, and deeply rooted in its place while also being extraordinarily efficient. We've spent years learning how to do all of it at once.

We take on a select number of projects each year. That's a deliberate choice. It means every client gets our full attention and every project gets the time it deserves. We build nice homes for nice people; clients who are engaged in the process, who care about craft and ethics and the land, and who want something built to last generations.

We started with a belief that good buildings and good business practices aren't in tension; that you can do rigorous, beautiful work and treat people well at the same time.

Every member of our team has the option to hold an ownership stake in the company and a voice in how we operate. We pay living wages, offer strong benefits, and invest in each other's growth. That structure isn't incidental to the quality of our work. It's the reason for it.

We approach every project as a collaboration between builder, client, and often an architect, and no two homes we've built are alike. Each one is shaped by the land it sits on, the people who will live in it, and the particular demands of building well in the Southern Appalachians.

What to expect when building with us

Building a custom home is one of the most significant investments you'll make. Whether the experience is a good one depends largely on who you choose to build with and how they work. We take on a select number of projects each year, by choice, so that every client gets our full attention and every project gets the time it deserves. What follows is an honest picture of what that looks like in practice.

Honest numbers from the start

Any estimate you receive at the conceptual stage - from us or anyone else - is exactly that: conceptual. Based on square footage and general scope, it's a starting point, not a promise. The number that actually matters comes later, after the design work is done. That's why we spend several months working through the design with you before we give you a detailed estimate, exploring variations in affordability, environmental impact, and aesthetics until the details are right and the number behind them is one we can stand behind.

We believe that kind of upfront investment in the design process is the only honest way to tell you what something will cost. It takes longer, and it requires a real commitment from both of us before construction ever begins. But it means that when we hand you a number, it means something. Budget matters to us too; we work hard to respect your financial guidelines and will explore as many options as it takes to find the right balance between what you want and what you can spend. Every subsequent change to the original scope is documented in writing before work begins, and you'll always be able to see the running total against your original contract.

Communication you can count on

We use a project management platform called Buildertrend to keep every conversation, decision, and document in one place, accessible to you at any time. During business hours you can expect a response from our team within 24 hours. When our schedule changes due to weather, inspections, or anything else, you'll hear from us before you have to wonder. When phone calls or site visits involve project decisions, you'll receive a written summary of what was discussed so there's a record everyone can refer back to.

A genuine collaboration

We approach every project as a collaboration between builder, client, and often an architect. There are decisions only you can make, and we build those moments into the schedule so nothing is assumed. We welcome you on site as often as you'd like throughout construction, and we'll walk through your completed home with you in detail before we consider any project finished.

Work built to last

We combine traditional craftsmanship with rigorous building science, including airtight envelopes, high-performance insulation assemblies, and construction practices designed to meet NC Green Built and Net Zero standards. A home can be warm, handcrafted, and deeply rooted in its place while also being extraordinarily efficient. When construction is complete, our two-year warranty begins, along with scheduled 3-month and 12-month walkthroughs to make sure everything continues to perform the way it should. Our standard for visible defects is straightforward: if it's observable in normal lighting to the naked eye, we fix it.

Who we're a good fit for

We build for clients who share our values of craftsmanship, integrity and sustainability. We also build almost exclusively in the South Toe Valley and the surrounding mountains; not because we can't work farther afield, but because we genuinely want to know the people we build for. When the project is done, you’ll be our neighbor, and that relationship matters to us as much as the work itself.
